"I wasn't trying to leave a legacy. I was trying to do he right thing." - Dean Smith

I think what this quote means is that Dean Smith didn't want to be known for all the games he won or how many awards he received, he wanted to do the right thing for his players. He didn't even want the stadium to be named after him because he didn't care for it. Some of his players went on to be part of bigger basketball teams like the Lakers. Dean Smith was loved by many people for all the things he has done for his team. He didn't like being the center of attention but everyone felt like all the attention should be on him because he was that important. Dean smith wanted to retire but his players persuaded him to coach a few more games and that is how he became the greatest coach of all time. Coaching his players made him happy and seeing their coach made the players happy. He won 879 games before he actually retired.
